Asian stocks inch lower, euro extends drop (Reuters)

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? Asian stocks fell on Thursday, taking cues from weak U.S. and European shares, as players cut positions heading into the year end with an Italian debt auction later in the day keeping markets nervous.

The euro extended losses against the dollar to near a one-year low, and a 10-year low against the yen, while the sell-off in stocks and the firm U.S. currency helped crude oil snap a six-session rally and kept gold prices near a three-month low.

The Nikkei (.N225) fell as much as 1.1 percent, before recovering to be off 0.7 percent. The MSCI ex-Japan Asia Pacific index (.MIAPJ0000PUS) shed 0.6 percent, weighed down by energy and material stocks.

"Everyone is holding onto their cash and people are not willing to invest in risk assets. With this kind of market sentiment, there's nowhere for the cash to go," said Hajime Nakajima, a sales trader at Cosmo Securities.

Italy's sale of up to 8.5 billion euros ($11 billion) later Thursday is seen as the first test of banks' willingness to buy longer-term sovereign debt with the nearly 500 billion euros they borrowed last week from the European Central Bank.

While Rome's short-term funding costs halved at an auction Wednesday, market players are worried that thin volumes prevalent across markets near the end of the year could complicate its efforts to sell longer-dated bonds.

U.S. stock indexes fell more than 1 percent in thin trading as investors feared what many expect to be a tough start to the year. The broad S&P 500 index erased its 2011 gains after just turning positive in last week's rally.

Wall Street's decline weighed on European stocks, which erased early gains. The FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index of top European shares fell 0.71 percent to end at 983.32, after rising as much as 0.63 percent earlier in the session.

EURO, OIL, GOLD SLIP

The euro nursed heavy losses in Asia, having suffered a sudden drop overnight as moves were amplified in poor year-end liquidity after stop-losses were triggered.

The single currency hit $1.2887, moving closer to its 2011 trough of $1.2860 marked on January 10, nearly a year ago. Against the yen, the euro skidded to a 10-year trough around 100.70, before steadying at 100.88.

Crude oil, which had gained for six sessions on heightened supply worries after Iran threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, eased as traders viewed the threat as rhetoric.

"A big increase in U.S. crude oil stocks and the falling euro against the dollar are the main pressure points for the market at the moment," said Ken Hasegawa, a derivatives manager with brokerage Newedge in Tokyo.

"We also had six consecutive days gaining in the oil market, so it is not strange to see some profit-taking from these sharp gains."

Brent eased three cents to $107.53 a barrel by 0207 GMT, adding to a loss of nearly $2 the day before.

Gold wallowed near a three-month low Thursday, remaining under pressure due to a firm dollar, while investors fretted over the Italian bond auction.

Spot gold edged down 0.3 percent to $1,550.90 an ounce by 0022 GMT, on course for an 11-percent decline in December. It hit a three-month low of $1,549.24 in the previous session.

College football gets richer

Penn State's woes won't cut college football dollars

Revenues and profits at Penn State football is about to take a hit due to the scandal there, but overall big time college football is only likely to get richer.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Penn State likely will be playing before more empty seats than full ones when it takes the field for its bowl game on Monday -- just one sign of tougher financial times ahead for one of the nation's richest teams.

But big-time college football is likely to only get richer.

Penn State was No. 6 in revenue among college football teams last season, $72.7 million. And it was No. 2 in profit, behind only the University of Texas, with $53.2 million.

But following the child abuse scandal and the firing of iconic coach Joe Paterno, experts said the school could expect to lose millions in sponsorship, ticket and merchandise sales in coming years. Donations from alumni could also be hurt. Moody's put Penn State's debt rating under review for possible downgrade.

The first hit to Penn State's bottom line could come Monday with its appearance in the TicketCity Bowl in Dallas.

Penn State ended up in the game after some late season losses killed its chance of getting into one of the big dollar BCS bowls, and other higher-profile bowl spots reserved for Big 10 schools went to other teams.

Missing out on the bigger bowls won't hurt revenue too much, since the conference shares bowl money pretty much equally among the schools. But in going to a lower-profile bowl game far from home, Penn State was only able to sell about 4,000 of the 6,000 tickets it was allocated for the game, and will have to eat the rest.

Tom Starr, executive director of the bowl, said he doesn't think that the scandal hurt as much as the overall economy, adding that bowl game ticket sales are down nationwide.

"Fans don't have the money to travel to see a game," he said Friday. "And where we also are getting hurt is midlevel corporate sales."

But the bowls aren't the major source of revenue for the 122 teams in the Football Bowl Division. Instead the main dollars come from television rights, and revenue from sponsorships, ticket sales and licensed merchandise.

An analysis by CNNMoney of figures filed by the schools with the Department of Education shows that revenue for the major football programs in the 2010-11 school year was up 5% to $2.7 billion.

Profit growth was a more modest 2%, but that still came to $1.1 billion in profits, for a 41% margin that any pro sports team would kill to have.

Revenue and profits should only grow as the big dollar conferences play a game of musical chairs to grab new schools. When the dust of the reorganization finally settles, the moves are expected to bring in even more revenue, especially from television deals.

Dan Fulks, a professor at Kentucky's Transylvania University who consults for the NCAA, said the additional money isn't going to flow evenly to all schools. It will mean that most of the major football programs are only going to get richer.

"It'll widen the gap between the haves and havenots," he said. "The new TV money is certainly going to help, but it's going to help Ohio State, not Bowling Green."?To top of page

East Cleveland Mayor to Take Large Pay Cut

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio?

Just days after Christmas, the Mayor of East Cleveland found out he would be taking a huge pay cut.

Tuesday night, four attending council members voted unanimously to remove Mayor Gary Norton from his position as the city's public safety director, knocking his salary from $77,000 to $40,000.

"Nothing about East Cleveland is improved as a result of the decision that they made," said Mayor Norton. "In 2012, $40,000 a year is not fair compensation for the chief executive officer of the city, who is the mayor. The only people who can rectify that problem are the voters."

Council members say because of lost revenue the city has little choice when it comes to the budget. Mayor Norton says that is not true. "Not only did we cut the budget by 15 percent, we preserved the number of police and fire that we had."

City council said they also voted to cut 10 percent of the budget from most city departments. It is now up to the mayor to decide if those cuts will be made to personnel.

Norton says during his time in office he has brought in $16 million, in grant-funded projects. "We brought in grants more than we make a year, the reward for that, the leader of the executive team is to cut the mayor's salary in half. It doesn't make any sense."

According to the council clerk, council voted to fund the safety director position in 2009. The clerk says after Norton took office in 2010 he appointed himself to the position--a job that was not funded from 2005-2010.

One East Cleveland woman said she understood the council's position. "We didn't pay a mayor before to do it then, why should we pay a mayor now to do it?"

"If they didn't do it the last five years, we're in worse condition now, doesn't sound good if he's doing it now," said another East Cleveland resident.

Fox 8 News tried contacting the city council president seeking comment, but she did not return our phone calls.

Iris Erlingsdottir: Protecting Our Free Speech

After the recent Reykjavik District Court decisions penalizing a journalist for reprinting publicly-available information and presenting both sides of a domestic dispute, the Icelandic Supreme Court has taken some baby steps towards establishing a free press in Iceland.

The newspaper DV reported that Iceland's most successful soccer player, Ei?ur Sm?ri Gu?johnsen, had received large loans from a bank without adequate collateral. When the banks failed in 2008, their lending practices came under intense public scrutiny, and Gu?johnsen's situation was singled out by the press as emblematic of the favoritism shown to the rich and famous.

Although he had been featured prominently in European media for years, Gu?johnsen felt his personal privacy had been invaded when his shady financial dealings came to light and filed a libel suit against the journalist. The district court sided with him, but, in a rare display of common sense, the Supreme Court ruled that the public discussion of this matter was protected by the Icelandic Constitution's free speech guarantee. Not only were the lending practices of the banks a matter of public concern, but Gu?johnsen's salary had been widely reported; additionally, his gambling addiction had been written about in the foreign press.

Even though the reporter ultimately prevailed, this matter still stands as a warning to Icelandic journalists. Not only did the court fail to establish a bright line test that newspapers could use when deciding whether to go forward with a story, but, outrageously, the reporter and his newspaper were required to pay their considerable attorney fees and litigation costs.

The real threat created by the nuisance libel suits filed by the powers-that-be in Iceland lies in the expense and inconvenience that they entail. As a practical matter, the financial viability of a media organization today is precarious, and the very substantial costs they face in these suits endangers their existence.

To deal with this problem, many states in the United States have enacted anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) legislation. These statutes allow the defendant to file a motion to dismiss the complaint if it involves a constitutionally-protected matter. The filing of an anti-SLAPP motion halts all discovery. Once the defendant has made a prima facie showing that the matter is protected, the burden falls on the plaintiff to establish a reasonable probability of success on the merits. If the trial court denies the motion, the defendant may immediately appeal. If the defendant prevails, the plaintiff is required to pay its attorney fees.

The obvious benefit of such legislation is to greatly reduce the expense of engaging in journalism. It would help stop those with considerable financial means from abusing our legal system to bully those seeking to reveal their unsavory acts or to challenge their opinions. But even more is required to give us a fully-functioning free press.

It is undeniable that private citizens enjoy a right to privacy. It is also true that this right may be violated by the indiscriminate publication of personal information. What we really need is a pronouncement by the Icelandic Supreme Court or the Icelandic legislature clarifying the line separating matters of public concern and matters of private concern. As it stands now, a practicing journalist has no way of determining before publication whether a story will subject him or her to civil (or even criminal) liability. Legend has it that the Roman emperor Caligula would have laws inscribed on the tops of columns where no one could see them, then prosecute individuals who violated them. Our current situation is not dissimilar.

In the United States, the Supreme Court provided in 1964, in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, a viable test for journalists. The Court ruled that a public official could recover damages for a defamatory falsehood relating to his official conduct only if the published statement was false and that the statement was made maliciously or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not. A decade later the Court redefined its definition of public figure in Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., where it held that public figures are those who "thrust themselves" into the public eye and invite close scrutiny.

These cases have not stopped libel suits against newspapers, but at least they give a logical framework for editors to use in deciding how much collaboration is needed before publication.
It would, of course, also help if the Icelandic Court would clarify that truth is an absolute defense to a defamation charge. Astonishingly, as recent cases have shown, the republication of a true statement from publicly-available government documents can -- under the current state of law -- form the basis of a libel claim.

I am encouraged by the decision in the Gu?johnsen case, but we still have a long, long way to go.

Samsung Wont Offer Andoid OS to Galaxy S Smartphone Users

By: Vincent Chang |

?Samsung has announced that it wont be able to offer an OS upgrade to Android version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for owners of the older Galaxy S smartphone due to a lack of RAM and ROM to run the new OS alongside TouchWiz and other "experience-enhancing" software.

The Galaxy S smartphone sold over 10 million units, leaving a large customer base without an upgrade path. The same problem also applies to owners of the Galazy Tab 7-inch tablet, the Verge website reported.

The Samsung Nexus S smartphone is receiving the OS upgrade, despite coming with a similar hardware profile as the Galaxy S. However, the Nexus S is a pure-Android phone and lacks the "enhancements" offered by Samsung with the Galaxy range.

Baseball: Reds acquire reliever Marshall from Cubs

?

NEW YORK: The Cincinnati Reds, seeking to bolster their bullpen, have acquired reliever Sean Marshall from the Chicago Cubs as part of a four-player trade, the National League team said yesterday.

Cincinnati sent pitcher Travis Wood, outfielder Dave Sappelt and minor league infielder Ronald Torreyes to Chicago.

Marshall posted a 6-6 record and 2.26 earned run average and had five saves in 78 relief appearances for the Cubs last season.

?Sean has been one of the best and most durable relievers in baseball the last couple of seasons,? Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement. ?He will be a solid addition to what we think already is a strong bullpen.?

Sappelt, 24, hit .243 in 38 appearances for the Reds.

Keith Ferrazzi: Serve and Grow... Together This Holiday

A number of holiday seasons ago we were sitting at a fancy resort attending a well-known holiday weekend event that I had proudly accepted an invitation to along with almost a thousand other individuals and their families. We were talking about the state of our world when my guest leaned over and asked: "Do you think next year we might actually go do something instead of just talking about it?"

The comment launched our annual tradition of traveling to a third world country to serve in orphanages for the holidays. We wanted to "do something good" and the choice has ended up being one of the most unexpected and powerful gifts we have given ourselves.

This year, a number of friends and their families are joining us to serve others, rejuvenate themselves, explore a new region of the world, and to connect much more deeply as a family through our service to and engagement with orphans living just outside of Antigua, Guatemala.

I did this particular trip a few years ago and was struck by the amazing beauty of it all. It was a spiritually grounding experience and an empowering way to start the New Year. I can't wait to see the experience through the eyes of our friends' children. The experience is transformative to anyone who has not experienced real poverty, but then also to witness such deep joy among those with nothing. Each year we grow more connected as a family and a couple.

These experiences prove to be transformational, a reflective and stark reminder of what's important. Our hope is that we all come back more grounded, more empathetic, authentic and generous, and that it stays with us. Being able to help others in such a real way has even accelerated my own leadership when I get back home. I know my team relationships have become more understanding and our collaborative success has grown.

We also welcome and include our friends and their families who do not go with us. In supporting last year's trip, which was to Cambodia, our friend Arianna donated 20 chickens to the kids we met during one of our days at an orphanage. Oh, and also a big pot of milk and cookies, which I suspect the kids may have appreciated more than the chickens.

If you care to join Arianna and others in supporting these kids this holiday season, I might suggest going to www.keithferrazzi.com/about/charity to read past blogs, maybe looking at additional pictures of various trips on Facebook, and talking with your own families about how you all might serve and grow together. What could be more in the spirit of the holidays than making a difference together?

'Jack The Giant Killer' Trailer Goes Up The Beanstalk

Hollywood loves its remakes, and fairy tales are the easiest money of all. What child or adult in America isn't familiar with the story of Jack and the beanstalk, even if they're not clear on the specifics? Then again, the specifics can be largely invented based on whatever tired parent is telling the story to [...]
