Oh No They Didn't! - Teen Mom Arrested/Baby Shower

Jenelle Evans Arrested After Failing to Appear in Court

Jenelle Evans will be adding another mugshot to her collection. The 21-year-old Teen Mom 2 star was arrested on Monday, May 20 after failing to appear in court.

Evans was scheduled to appear at Brunswick County District Court in North Carolina for a hearing in her cyberstalking case, but didn't arrive on time.

"Jenelle was running late to court," her attorney, Dustin Sullivan, tells Us Weekly. "I told the court she was on her way and the court said they will keep it open. It was the last case of the day, so they put a $1,000 secure bond on her at the end of the day."

The MTV star turned herself in and posted the $1,000 bond. "She was virtually under arrest for failure to appear so she turned herself in," Sullivan explained. "I believe she has already been released."

The MTV star, mom to 3-year-old son Jace, tweeted Monday, "FML." A source tells Us that Evans "knew she had the court date."

Just last week, Evans appeared in court to attend a hearing regarding her Apr. 23 arrest for heroin possession and one charge of assault on husband Courtland Rogers.

"Her court date has been continued by the State of N.C. until July 1, 2013," Sullivan told Wetpaint Entertainment following her hearing. "I anticipate that she will be indicted before that court date. No new information was given but that is typical in felony cases still in district court for us."

It?s official ? the ?Teen Mom 2? star is definitely going to be a mom of two! The 21-year-old celebrated her baby shower on May 19, and looked so happy and glowing!

Kailyn Lowry officially has a bun in the oven, and celebrated her second pregnancy with friends and family during a May 19 baby shower! The Teen Mom 2 star, who welcomed baby Isaac in 2010 with then-boyfriend Jo Rivera, is expecting her first child with hubby Javi Marroquin.

Kailyn, who turned 21 on March 14, has been staying mostly mum about the pregnancy reports, but her friend Christina Pietrobon spilled the beans when she posted photos to her Instagram account of Kail?s baby shower.

The adorable pics show Kailyn and two friends grabbing her growing baby bump, and kissing her pregnant belly. Christina tweeted, ?we?re so happy about the baby!? with one of the photos, and later added, ?at Kailyn?s baby shower!?

Looks like the good news is officially no longer a secret!

Kailyn?s pregnancy news was first revealed came to light when an insider revealed to InTouch magazine in March that she was expecting her first baby with Javi.

?They?re overjoyed! When Kailyn told Javi, he cried,? the insider told the magazine. The source added that Kail and Javi were anxious about the shake-up of adding another kid to the mix of their hectic lives.

?They?re nervous about the transition to two children, but are so excited!? the source revealed.

Fifty-five beaches meet new rules

More than 50 English beaches have met tough new EU standards to receive Blue Flag awards, recognising their high standards and water quality.

Thanet in Kent won eight awards, while the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth and Poole in Dorset, and Torbay in Devon each received four awards.

Campaign group Keep Britain Tidy runs the awards scheme in England.

The 55-beach total is down from 79 in 2012, but this year beaches were subject to much tougher standards.

'Town asset'

They had to meet the new "excellent" standard required under the new EU Bathing Waters Directive.

Beaches also had to advise users where they could obtain real-time information on discharges from nearby combined sewage overflows if it could temporarily affect the quality of bathing water.

Other well-known beaches awarded Blue Flags this year included Central Beach in Skegness, Lincolnshire; Lowestoft South Claremont in Suffolk; Martello Bay at Clacton-on-Sea in Essex; and Whitby in North Yorkshire.

Westward Ho! beach in North Devon was awarded a Blue Flag for the 10th year in a row.

A further 133 beaches in England were rated clean enough to be awarded Seaside Awards - formerly known as Quality Coast Awards - by Keep Britain Tidy.

The Isle of Wight won the most awards nationwide, with a total of four Blue Flags and 13 Seaside Awards.

Richard McIlwain, Keep Britain Tidy operations director, said: "Keep Britain Tidy campaigns to improve the quality of our local environment and we know that communities up and down the country love their beaches and understand what an asset they are for their towns' economies.

Holidaymakers and day trippers want to visit clean, safe beaches and the sight of the Blue Flag or Seaside Award flying gives them the reassurance that they will."

Silk and cellulose biologically effective for use in stem cell cartilage repair

May 7, 2013 ? Over 20 million people in Europe suffer from osteoarthritis which can lead to extensive damage to the knee and hip cartilage. Stem cells offer a promising way forward but a key challenge has been to design a 'smart material' that is biologically effective for cartilage tissue regeneration. Now researchers have identified a blend of naturally occurring fibres such as cellulose and silk that makes progress towards affordable and effective cell-based therapy for cartilage repair a step closer.

The EPSRC-funded study, published in Biomacromolecules and undertaken by University of Bristol researchers, explored the feasibility of using natural fibres such as silk and cellulose as stem cell scaffolds -- the matrix to which stem cells can cling to as they grow.

Both cellulose and silk are commonly used in textiles but the researchers demonstrated an unexpected use for the two natural polymers when mixed with stem cells. The team treated blends of silk and cellulose for use as a tiny scaffold that allows adult connective tissue stem cells to form into preliminary form of chondrocytes -- the cells that make healthy tissue cartilage -- and secrete extracellular matrix similar to natural cartilage.

Dr Wael Kafienah, lead author from the University's School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, said: "We were surprised with this finding, the blend seems to provide complex chemical and mechanical cues that induce stem cell differentiation into preliminary form of chondrocytes without need for biochemical induction using expensive soluble differentiation factors. This new blend can cut the cost for health providers and makes progress towards effective cell-based therapy for cartilage repair a step closer."

Dr Sameer Rahatekar, lead author from the University's Advanced Composite Centre for Innovation and Science (ACCIS), added: "We used ionic liquids for the first time to produce cellulose and silk scaffolds for stem cells differentiation. These liquids are effective in dissolving biopolymers and are environmentally benign compared to traditional solvents used for processing of cellulose and silk."

The teams are currently working on the fabrication of 3D structures from the blend suitable for implantation in patient joints with future studies focusing on understanding the peculiar interactions between the blend and stem cells towards refining the quality of regenerated cartilage.

As South Korea and US end military drills, how will North Korea react?

Many Korea watchers speculated that once joint military drills ended, so would increased tensions with North Korea. But at least one analyst says this might be the moment the North lashes out again.?

The annual military defensive exercises are intended to act as a deterrent to North Korea through shows of military prowess.?North Korea, however, called the two month-long exercises an aggressive invasion threat and promised military retaliation if provoked directly.

But now that the exercises are over, the North could tell its people that its own military successfully warded off the threat, conceivably allowing it enter dialogue with the South without appearing to lose face.?But some analysts argue that as the general atmosphere has cooled, action by North Korea could actually be more likely.

?Now that the exercises are over, this is an opportune time for a missile launch,? says Sung-yoon Lee, professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. ?Now that their adversaries have their guard down, they could go ahead with a launch now, ahead of the upcoming summit between Obama and Park Geun-hye, to put pressure on Park.?

South Korean President Park Geun-hye, who was inaugurated on Feb. 25, is scheduled to meet with US President Obama in Washington on May 7. North Korea has been known to purposely raise tensions in an effort to rattle new administrations in Seoul or Washington.?

"The drill is over, but the South Korean and US militaries will continue to watch out for potential provocations by the North, including a missile launch," said Kim Min-seok, a spokesperson for South Korea?s Ministry of National Defense.

The two-month long exercises started up shortly after the North's third nuclear test in February and involved around 10,000 US troops and 200,000 South Korean forces. Throughout the exercises, some impressive weaponry was shown off, including B-52 bombers and a nuclear-armed submarine. After the exercises began, the North announced it was scrapping an armistice agreement that effectively put the Korean War on hold, and said it was?entering a "state of war." The North also cut two hotlines to South Korea, symbols of North-South cooperation, but left a joint economic region alone until April.?

The jointly-operated Kaesong industrial park, the last major symbol of cooperation between South and North?was designed to economically benefit both sides, providing South Korean companies with cheap labor, and North Koreans with much needed income. Since it was started in 2004, it has survived years of chilly inter-Korean relations.?

But North Korea unexpectedly barred South Koreans from entering the area early in April and then withdrew all its workers shortly thereafter. Though some South Korean workers stayed at the complex, many went back to South Korea.

The situation at Kaesong is one aspect of the crisis that appears set to continue.

Yesterday, 43 of the final 50 South Korean workers in Kaesong returned home. Seven stayed behind to deal with some unpaid wages, as North Korea has not approved their departure yet, according to Chosun. There is not yet any indication that Seoul and Pyongyang will cooperate in finding a way to get operations at the complex back underway. The complex brought in about $80 million in revenue for North Korea in 2012, so there is a large financial incentive for the North to restart business there.?

Today South Korean Minister of Unification Ryoo Kihl-jae said that while the South is interested in restarting operations at Kaesong, Seoul wouldn?t accept just any conditions demanded by North Korea.

"It is pointless to normalize operations at the Kaesong Industrial Complex if it entails accepting unreasonable claims and preconditions," Minister Ryoo said.

All throughout the war games, many analysts speculated that North Korea?s intention was to stir tensions and pull back at the last minute from any kind of engagement in an effort to strengthen its bargaining position when it returns to the table at some later date.?

?The general principle is to escalate tensions in order to later be able to negotiate from a position of strength,? Leonid Petrov, a researcher in Korean studies at Australian National University, told the Monitor on Apr. 10.

Kentucky Derby Betting: Will The New Qualification Format Impact ...

That?s the question that many horse racing experts are asking heading into the 2013 Kentucky Derby. Granted, most recreational horse players aren?t even aware that the qualification process for the Kentucky Derby has been altered but even they should understand at least the basic concepts of the changes if they?re looking to bet the race. The impact of the new qualification system is still being debate and probably won?t be fully determined until there?s a few races run under the new format. Since that won?t do you much good in terms of betting this year?s race we?ll summarize the changes and the arguments over how it?ll impact the race.

In the past the Kentucky Derby had a fairly wide open qualification process. A trainer showed up and paid the entry fee and his horse could run. Well, it?s not quite that simple?the horse could run provided that the field wasn?t ?oversubscribed? meaning if there wasn?t more horses than could be accommodated by the 20 entry limit in the Derby. At that point, eligible horses were ranked by the money they?d earned in graded stakes events. Not surprisingly, in recent years there has almost always been more than 20 horses looking to get into the field and connections were very cognizant of their chances of qualifying based on graded stakes earnings so if they weren?t ?in the hunt? they wouldn?t even bother.

For the first time this year there?s a more regimented process for qualifying for the Kentucky Derby via a NASCAR-esque ?points system? where horses earn points in designated prep races. In many ways this is a different way of achieving the same result but it does have it?s upsides, not the least of which is a stronger field and more urgency in many of the bigger prep events. There are some consequences?for example, under the new format the chances of a top flight filly like Rachel Alexandra or Zenyatta qualifying are slim and none. Some suggest this is a good thing.

But how will the new format impact the race itself? Noted handicapper Andy Beyer and others suggest that it will create a slower pace than in years past. Beyer?s theory is long on speculation and short on empirical examples but does make some sense?under the new format their are fewer sprinters looking to set insane fractions and more closers. Without insane front running speed a more manageable pace will materialize and make strong closing horses an event better bet.

Like just about everything else in horse racing there are proponents as well as detractors from this theory. Some suggest that Beyer?s ?insane sprinters? scenario is more fiction than fact and just hasn?t been borne out by the data of actual races. In any case, if you?re going to bet the Kentucky Derby you should be aware that the nature of the race may have changed due to the changes in the qualification process.

Do you feel guilty tossing those spent toilet paper tubes into the recycle bin? Check out some crafty ways to reuse them instead!

For most of us, toilet paper is one of the areas where there isn?t a green alternative that works for our families. I know that there are alternatives to using toilet paper, but let?s be honest here, guys. Not everyone is ready to make that leap, and when you can?t reduce waste, reusing whatever you can is your best option.

There also might be a bit of an ick factor when it comes to reusing toilet paper tubes, and that?s totally understandable. If you?re just not comfortable crafting with them, you can also use paper towel tubes for these. If your family doesn?t do the paper towel thing, I bet you know someone who does who would save a few tubes for your crafty needs!

Self-affirmation improves problem-solving under stress

May 3, 2013 ? It's no secret that stress increases your susceptibility to health problems, and it also impacts your ability to solve problems and be creative. But methods to prevent associated risks and effects have been less clear -- until now.

Published in PLOS ONE, new research from Carnegie Mellon University provides the first evidence that self-affirmation can protect against the damaging effects of stress on problem-solving performance. Understanding that self-affirmation -- the process of identifying and focusing on one's most important values -- boosts stressed individuals' problem-solving abilities will help guide future research and the development of educational interventions.

"An emerging set of published studies suggest that a brief self-affirmation activity at the beginning of a school term can boost academic grade-point averages in underperforming kids at the end of the semester. This new work suggests a mechanism for these studies, showing self-affirmation effects on actual problem-solving performance under pressure," said J. David Creswell, assistant professor of psychology in CMU's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Because previous research indicated that self-affirmation may be an effective stress management approach, Creswell and his research team had college students rank-order a set of values (e.g., art, business, family and friends) in terms of their personal importance, and indicate their levels of chronic stress. Participants randomly assigned to a self-affirmation condition were asked to write a couple of sentences about why their number one ranked value was important (a standard self-affirmation exercise). All participants then had to complete a challenging problem-solving task under time pressure, which required creativity in order to generate correct solutions.

The results showed that participants who were under high levels of chronic stress during the past month had impaired problem-solving performance. In fact, they solved about 50 percent fewer problems in the task. But notably, this effect was qualified by whether participants had an opportunity to first complete the self-affirmation activity. Specifically, a brief self-affirmation was effective in eliminating the deleterious effects of chronic stress on problem-solving performance, such that chronically stressed self-affirmed participants performed under pressure at the same level as participants with low chronic stress levels.

"People under high stress can foster better problem-solving simply by taking a moment beforehand to think about something that is important to them," Creswell said. "It's an easy-to-use and portable strategy you can roll out before you enter that high pressure performance situation."
